NYT Wordle #1158: How I solved it

Today, the 20th of August 2024, is game 1158 of NYT Wordle. I try to solve this daily and have completed 327 of these over the last couple of years. So here is my Wordle journey for today, which includes my guesses, thought process, some statistics, and, of course, the ANSWER!

I always start my Wordle with 'Trace'. Let's see what that led to:

After the first guess:

🟨🟨

2 yellows. Let's analyze the possibilities that I can think of at the moment:

🅐🅔✖✖

-

🅐🅔✖✖

-

🅐🅔✖

Apnea

🅔🅐✖✖

-

✖🅐🅔✖✖

-

✖🅐🅔

Hazel

Navel

Label

🅔🅐

-

🅔🅐✖

Pedal

Penal

Delay

Medal

🅔🅐✖

Knead

Plead

Gleam

🅔🅐

-

🅔🅐

-

🅔🅐

🅔🅐

Takeaways:

  • Probability of 'E' being in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th spot, and 'A' being in the 2nd or 4th spot is the highest. Presence of another vowel is quite unlikely.
  • 'L' is present in almost every word, and is most likely to occur in the 5th spot.
  • The next most frequent alphabets seem to be 'D', and then 'P' and 'N'.

'Pedal' seems to be a pretty good guess at first glance. My brain isn't working like a computer at the moment, so I will not overthink it and just go for 'Pedal' and figure it out after that

After the second guess:

⬛🟩🟨🟩🟨

'Delay' seems to be the only possibility from my list. But before jumping to conclusions, let's check if there could be any other word with these letters

🅛🅔🅐🅓

-

🅓🅔🅛🅐✖

Delay

✖🅔🅛🅐🅓

-

I think I am about 95% confident that it will be 'Delay', so let's just go for it!

After the third guess:

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

If only I could solve every Wordle like this one. Minimal fuss, 3 guesses. Scored high on skill. Decent amount of luck. And I'm done for the day! An average of 3.8 guesses isn't that high. 93% of the people guessed it right in their 5th attempt, meaning most didn't really have a lot of trouble with this one.

Anyway, my score is back to 3.250, and I couldn't be happier. I am honestly quite satisfied with my guess distribution and will look to improve on it further.

See you tomorrow!
